The focus of Matter Affects is not only to produce high quality dance works, but also to connect with people through a series of actions through our initiatives.
Our productions are only the first step of what we share with the public, being it in our homebase Overijssel, The Netherlands or abroad. Stemming from them we promote encounters, workshops plus a series of public and educational actions.
And sharing is truly in the core of our philosophy.
resonance group
In 2022 we started in Zwolle our 'Resonance Group'
Born in collaboration with the Zwolse Theaters, it started as way to narrow the contact between creator and audience, through an exchange in which members of the public 'resonate' on the artistic propositions of a performance in its various stages of creation.
During a series of meetings choreographer and dance enthusiasts talk about all elements which are part of the making of a performance: from its sources of inspiration to the musical choices, from the uncertainties around artistic choices to the decisions which define their form.
‘The resonance group has become a milestone in our creative processes. It is a meeting of curious people who see their role as an audience as something beyond watching as spectators. Together, we ask questions, listen, explore possibilities as we deepen our research into the many topics involved in our creations. This exchange is something fundamental between audience and performers: the direct dialogue, the immediate reflection on how we affect each other and how that ‘resonates’ in our lives outside the walls of the theatre.’ - Samir Calixto
The group meets periodically in Zwolle during key moments of the creative process, and has had a very important impact in Matter Affects' productions.

workshops and masterclasses
It is part of our philosophy to build a community around dance which contributes to building the audiences of tomorrow while dialoguing with those of today.
Coupled to our productions there are always a series of educational activities for dance enthusiasts of all ages. Among these activities are workshops and lectures for all levels, in different settings and configurations.
We also work in connection to dance and art institutes in The Netherlands and Europe, contributing to the education of future artists through masterclasses, research and new commissions.
